SK hynix Invests 9.4 Trillion Won in Yongin Semiconductor Cluster

Introduction

SK hynix Inc. announced today its decision to invest approximately 9.4 trillion won in constructing the first fab and associated business facilities within the Yongin semiconductor cluster. This strategic move was confirmed following a board resolution on the 26th.

Construction Timeline and Goals

The company plans to commence construction of the first fab in March next year and aims to complete it by May 2027. This investment, which has received board approval, will form the foundation for SK hynix’s future growth and enable it to meet the rising demand for AI memory semiconductors.

Yongin Cluster Development

The Yongin cluster, spanning 4.15 million square meters in Wonsam-myeon, Yongin, Gyeonggi Province, is currently undergoing site preparation and infrastructure development. SK hynix intends to build four state-of-the-art fabs and a semiconductor cooperation complex involving more than 50 local small businesses. The first fab’s construction will be followed by three additional fabs, ultimately establishing Yongin as a global AI semiconductor production base.

Investment Details

The approved investment includes construction costs for auxiliary facilities, business support buildings, and welfare amenities. The investment period is scheduled from August 2024 to the end of 2028, accommodating the design phase and the anticipated completion of the business support building in the second half of 2028.

Future Production

At the first fab, SK hynix will produce next-generation DRAMs, including HBM, a key AI memory component. The company is also preparing to produce other products based on market demand upon completion. Additionally, SK hynix plans to establish a “mini-fab” within the first phase, providing small businesses with an environment akin to actual production sites for technology development, demonstration, and evaluation.

Conclusion

Vice President Kim Young-sik, head of manufacturing technology at SK hynix, emphasized that the Yongin cluster would serve as the cornerstone for the company’s mid- to long-term growth. It aims to drive innovation and foster co-prosperity with its partners, significantly enhancing Korea’s semiconductor technology and ecosystem competitiveness while revitalizing the national economy.
