Introduction to the New USB-IF Conformity Program

The USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF), a key organization supporting the evolution of USB technology, has recently launched the USB-IF Conformity to IEC 62680 Specifications Program. This initiative aims to help original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and original device manufacturers (ODMs) comply with the European Union’s (EU) Common Charger Directive. The directive, which will be effective from January 1, 2025, for portable battery-powered devices and in 2026 for laptops, mandates standardized charging technology across various devices.

Addressing the EU Common Charger Directive

The newly introduced program by USB-IF specifically targets vital aspects of the EU Common Charger Directive. These include portable battery-powered devices, USB Type-C receptacles, USB Type-C cables and connectors, external power supplies (EPS), and the USB Power Delivery (USB PD) protocol for devices that advertise more than 15 watts.

Testing and Documentation Process

Using the USB-IF program, OEMs and ODMs can submit their USB Type-C products for formal testing through USB-IF authorized independent test labs (ITLs). Upon successful completion, they will receive documentation proving their products meet the IEC 62680 (USB) specifications. This efficient process ensures that manufacturers can comply with EU regulatory deadlines, maintaining their market access.

Ensuring Industry-Wide Compliance

The USB-IF conformity program provides a straightforward and cost-effective method for OEMs and ODMs to demonstrate compliance. “Our testing procedures offer a precise and reliable assessment, allowing manufacturers to showcase their adherence to the EU’s regulatory requirements confidently,” said Abdul Ismail, Chief Technology Officer and Chairman of the Board at USB-IF.

Conclusion

While the USB-IF Conformity to IEC 62680 (USB) Specifications Program offers critical support to manufacturers for EU directive compliance, it is distinct from the comprehensive USB-IF Compliance Program. The latter provides extensive testing to verify a product’s overall performance, reliability, and interoperability with USB standards. As industry players utilize this new program, they can continue to meet regulatory needs and keep their products available in the EU market.
