According to a recent Reuters report, OpenAI is actively expanding its efforts in the custom silicon space, moving beyond initial talks with Broadcom to a more comprehensive strategy involving multiple industry leaders. This shift demonstrates a commitment to enhancing its AI infrastructure, as OpenAI teams up with well-known players like TSMC and Broadcom.

A Partnership with Industry Leaders

Broadcom, recognized as a fabless chip designer, provides a range of silicon solutions, from networking to custom ASICs. With OpenAI focusing on inference operations, the collaboration aims at developing proprietary AI chips tailored for its unique needs. The challenge of creating chips for training runs remains, but OpenAI is presently concentrating on optimizing inference processes.

Building a Dedicated Team

This initiative marks a significant shift from merely exploratory discussions to a more structured approach, underscored by the formation of a dedicated chip team led by former Google TPU engineers. With around 20 specialists, OpenAI aims to secure manufacturing capacity with TSMC and is targeting a 2026 deadline for its first custom-designed chip.
