Micron Technology: A Giant Leap Back to U.S. Manufacturing

The Biden-Harris Administration’s Support

The Biden-Harris administration is putting its money where its mouth is, with a hefty backing of up to $6.165 billion in direct funding to Micron Technology through the Chips Incentives Program. This initiative aims to supercharge the company’s manufacturing growth, a bold move to reposition America as a leader in semiconductor production.

Revolutionizing the Memory Manufacturing Landscape

Micron’s ambitious plans outlined in October 2022 include a staggering $100 billion investment in their Clay, New York fabrication facility and an additional $25 billion for operations in Idaho. The goal? To elevate the United States’ share of advanced memory manufacturing from a meager 2% to around 10% by 2035. This shift not only aims to fortify the economy but also strives to establish a reliable domestic supply of cutting-edge DRAM chips.

Jobs, Jobs, Jobs!

As if that wasn’t enough to stir excitement, this substantial investment is expected to create approximately 20,000 jobs across the U.S. In particular, Micron’s focus on advanced memory semiconductor technology could see them spending about $50 billion before 2030. Additionally, with a potential $275 million upgrade of the Manassas, Virginia plant, they hope to reinvigorate the local job market—an estimated 2,700 jobs could be created at peak capacity, alongside hundreds at their upgraded facilities.
