Google to Discontinue Chromecast in Favor of New Google TV Streamer

Introduction

Google has recently announced its decision to discontinue all Chromecast products, marking a significant shift towards its new Google TV streamer. Over the past 11 years, Google has sold around 100 million Chromecast units across different generations, offering varied feature sets and form factors. With this transition, Google aims to provide a more robust streaming solution with added functionalities.

Transition to Google TV Streamer

The Google TV streamer represents a departure from Chromecast’s HDMI dongle design, opting instead for a set-top-box type device. While some may view this as a misstep, it offers several advantages, especially for users who prefer such a device. Available in white (porcelain) and grey (hazel), the streamer may not boast the most appealing colors, but it’s the internal features that really count.

Enhanced Performance and Storage

Although Google has not disclosed the CPU used in the Google TV streamer, the company claims it performs 22 percent faster than the Chromecast with Google TV. It includes 4 GB of RAM and 32 GB of built-in storage—four times more than the latest Chromecast generation. Additionally, this device features a gigabit ethernet port for those with a network port near their TV, along with 802.11ac/wifi 5 and Bluetooth 5.1 connectivity options.

Additional Features

The Google TV streamer also aims to function as a home automation hub. It supports Matter and can act as a Thread border router. Its HDMI port supports HDMI 2.1a and offers HDR 10 and Dolby Vision, along with Dolby Atmos sound output. Power is provided via a USB-C port, which has data capabilities, though details are limited.

Remote Control and AI Integration

The updated remote control includes a ‘find my remote’ feature, activated by a physical button on the back of the device. Users can also connect Bluetooth headphones directly to the streamer. Additionally, Google has integrated its Gemini AI technology to deliver reviews and content breakdowns for those interested. The Google TV streamer will retail at an MSRP of $100, double that of the 4K Chromecast with Google TV, and will be available from September 24th.

Conclusion

Google’s move to discontinue Chromecast in favor of the Google TV streamer signifies a major transition in its streaming device strategy. While opinions may differ on the new form factor, the enhanced features and performance improvements are likely to make it a popular choice among consumers.
