CD Projekt Red Enters Full Production on Project Polaris
CD Projekt Red has officially entered full production on their highly anticipated next installment of the Witcher series, currently known as Project Polaris. Game director Sebastian Kalemba announced this exciting news via social media, notifying fans that the studio is now in the development of what many are referring to as ‘The Witcher 4.’
A New Direction for the Witcher Series
This new chapter is set to diverge from the familiar story of Geralt of Rivia. Instead, speculation suggests that the narrative may shift towards Geralt’s adopted daughter, Ciri. This change could bring about a more agile and dynamic combat system that aligns with her supernatural abilities, providing an engaging gameplay experience that fans have been eagerly anticipating.
Expansion of the Witcher Universe
The development of Project Polaris is part of CD Projekt Red’s ambitious expansion of the Witcher universe, which includes five concurrent projects. Notably, one of these is a ground-up remake of the 2007 original Witcher game, dubbed Project Canis Majoris, being developed by the Polish studio Fool’s Theory. Additionally, Boston-based studio The Molasses Flood is working on a unique spin-off title that promises to offer an ‘unusual approach’ to the franchise.
In a significant shift, CD Projekt Red has also decided to abandon its proprietary REDengine in favor of Unreal Engine 5 for all new projects, ensuring high-quality production values. While the studio remains tight-lipped about the production timeline, it is expected that the development will span two to five years, consistent with their history of prioritizing quality over speed. Fans can also look forward to a new Cyberpunk title being developed from their Boston location, backed by teams from Vancouver and Warsaw.
