AMD Gains Momentum in CPU Market: Insights from Recent Mercury Research Report

AMD’s Significant Progress in the CPU Market

In a recent report by Mercury Research, AMD has demonstrated notable progress in the CPU market during Q2 2024, particularly in the data center and laptop segments. AMD’s most significant accomplishment is in the server CPU sector, where it now holds 24.1% of the market, marking a 5.6% increase year-over-year and a 0.5% rise from the previous quarter.

Impressive Revenue Performance in the Data Center

AMD’s growth in the server CPU market is especially remarkable in terms of revenue. The company has captured 33.7% of server CPU revenue despite a lower unit share. This indicates that AMD’s high-end EPYC processors, which command premium prices, are the driving force behind most of the unit volume in the data center market.

Advancements in the Laptop CPU Segment

In addition to its success in the server sector, AMD has also made significant strides in the laptop CPU market. The company’s market share has reached 20.3%, representing a 1% increase from the previous quarter and a 3.8% rise year-over-year. This growth can be attributed to robust demand for AMD’s existing products, further fueled by Intel’s reported supply issues with its Meteor Lake processors.

Mixed Results in the Desktop CPU Market

Despite these gains, AMD faced a slight decline in the desktop CPU market, losing a 1% share to Intel quarter-over-quarter. AMD now controls 23% of this segment, compared to Intel’s 77%. This dip may be due to AMD’s preparation for the launch of its new Zen 5-based CPUs in August.

AMD vs. Intel: Market Dynamics

Overall, Intel continues to dominate the CPU market. In the total client PC space, Intel holds a 78.9% market share, with AMD at 21.1%. Intel maintains the majority of revenue and market share across all segments. However, AMD’s ongoing execution and Intel’s financial troubles suggest that more competition in the future is likely. The data from upcoming quarters will be key to understanding how both companies continue to perform.
