As we learned last September, ASUS has taken over Intel’s NUC division. However, this range of mini-computers is losing some of its feathers, as the brand is discontinuing the NUC Extreme series. Due to its size and technical constraints, the series was not widely adopted, especially as it competes directly with certain machines from the Taiwanese manufacturer.
The NUC series is a range of ultra-compact computers initially offered by Intel. For greater performance, the company offered the Extreme version, which came with a large CPU and a PCIe slot for a dedicated graphics card. However, this range came very close to an ITX computer, which is already offered by ASUS. In its catalog, the brand offers the Strix G16CHR based on an i7 14700KF and an RTX 4080.
Upgrading this machine was no easy task, since a new motherboard had to be developed to accommodate a 14900K, for example. Upgrading the graphics card would make sense, but what’s the point of offering a “next-generation” machine without a new processor?
All these technical reasons led ASUS to discontinue the series. On the contrary, at CES, ASUS unveiled its ROG NUC, a 2.5l machine equipped with a Core Ultra 9 and a mobile RTX 4070.
